Dewy, glowing skin is always in style, and hyaluronic acid can help you achieve it. This “it” ingredient has been a staple in skin care for years and is a must for keeping skin healthy, protected, and hydrated. Read on to learn more about the benefits of hyaluronic acid, as well as how to incorporate it into your skin care routine through topicals and aesthetic treatments.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide, a form of sugar, that already occurs naturally in our bodies. It plays many roles, supporting the cartilage in our joints, keeping muscles limber, and even promoting eye health. Because of its moisture retention qualities, it’s critical in maintaining hydration levels. For this reason, hyaluronic acid (also known as sodium hyaluronate), plays a major role in the skin.
What makes hyaluronic acid unique is its ability to attract and retain more than 1,000 times its own weight in water. This ultra-hydration is what makes HA a superhero for the skin, since it can draw moisture from the surrounding atmosphere and pull it into the layers of the epidermis.
When applied topically to the skin via skin care products, hyaluronic acid also fortifies the moisture barrier to prevent moisture loss, leaving your skin hydrated and protected throughout the day. It also gives your skin that much-sought-after supple, plump, and dewy look.
Because of its usefulness as a humectant, you can incorporate HA into almost every step of your skin care routine. In fact, it’s probably an ingredient of many of the products you already use. To amp up the moisture factor, however, look for HA in serum form, as a serum will contain a higher concentration of sodium hyaluronate and goes on before your moisturizer.
What’s more, always apply hyaluronic acid serums to damp skin if possible. Damp skin can accept moisture more easily than dry skin, and if your HA product is formulated with other ingredients, like occlusives, even better. Occlusives such as olive oil, jojoba oil, and mineral oil help seal in all the moisture HA draws to the skin.
One thing to note is that as we age, our hyaluronic acid levels go down, and the skin is less able to retain the HA that’s in our skin products, as well. By 40 or 50, our skin has about half as much of the HA it had at age 20. Additionally, daily environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution can accelerate this aging process, which leads to skin feeling dry, having uneven texture, and showing more fine lines and wrinkles.
