How to Deep Clean Your Face

How to Deep Clean Your Face

Starting with a clean canvas is the first rule of skin care. Without proper cleansing, your face accumulates buildup from products, makeup, air pollution, dead skin, and other dirt and debris. Buildup overtaxes the skin, making it prone to irritation, inflammation, premature aging, acne, and other issues. Additionally, you wont get the full benefit of your skin care routine. Thats why its important to wash your face properly, and deep clean the skin on a regular basis.

The Right Way to Wash Your Face

Before delving into a deeper clean, heres a checklist to make sure youre washing your face properly on a daily basis:

  • Wash your hands first. Plenty of us skip this stepjust imagine all the germs that are transferred from your fingertips to your face if you dont wash them first!
  • Use lukewarm warm water. Too hot, and the water strips skin of natural oils and dries it outtoo cold, and your cleansers wont work as effectively.
  • Double cleanse if youre wearing makeup. It might seem like a hassle to remove your makeup before washing it, but its worth it for that deep clean feel, especially since most gentle face washes arent formulated to remove makeup. Makeup remover pads, an oil cleanser, or a cleansing balm are the way to go.
  • Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Abrasive cleansers that contain micro-beads or other physical exfoliants are too harsh for facial skin, potentially creating small tears and enlarged pores. Go gentle instead.
  • Set your timer. Most of us dont wash for long enough. Facial cleansers generally require at least 30 seconds to remove dirt and product effectively, so spend that time gently massaging your skin to get it good and clean.
  • Rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft, clean towel. You should really be replacing your face towel every other day. Patting your skin dry instead of rubbing leaves more moisture behind.
  • Apply your skin care products within 3-5 minutes of washing. This helps seal in hydration, and your serums and other products should go on when your skin is clean and receptive.
  • Limit washing to twice a day and after sweating. Wash your face once in the morning and once at night, as well as after sweating heavily. In the morning, you might consider using only water to wash your faceovernight, your skin builds up healthy collagen, elastin, and protective natural oils, which you dont want to wash away.

In addition to the steps above, you may want to add in a DIY deep cleaning step once per week. Here are some safe, gentle ways to deep clean your face at home.
