How to Keep Weight Off During the Holidays

Ah, the winter holidays. A time for cheer, fun, time with family, and way too much food.

Unfortunately, weight gain and the holidays often seem to go hand in hand. But they don’t have to! All you have to do is keep a few tips in mind as the New Year rolls around. Even if you overindulge in a few Christmas cookies, sticking to your plan can help you keep the weight off so that your New Year’s Resolution doesn’t have to be “lose the holiday weight.” Here are our tips:

Account for cheating. You’re going to cheat. Think about it: Thanksgiving, New Year’s parties—it’s incredibly difficult to avoid rich, fattening foods this time of year. So don’t try! Account for cheating. Eat a light breakfast the morning of Thanksgiving. Get a run in. Then when Grandma offers you her special-made Pumpkin pie, you won’t have to refuse her and feel guilty later. After all, it was all part of the plan.
Increase exercise. You need somewhere for all of the calories to go. So participate in that family Thanksgiving football game, or throw in a morning run on your day off. You’ll feel great, you’ll burn off the excess sugar, and you won’t feel lethargic all weekend long.
Stay true to your clothes size. Don’t wear those elastic waistband pants or your “fat dress” simply because the holidays are here. Keep yourself accountable, and wear well-fitting clothes. This will help you stay inspired and conscious of your eating decisions throughout the holidays.
