How to Winterize Your Skin Care Routine

How to Winterize Your Skin Care Routine

Winter is here, and with it the temperature drops, the wind picks up, and humidity is a distant memory. The cold weather brings an onslaught of environmental factors that can wreak havoc on your skin care routine. You may find that the products and treatments that worked wonders for you the rest of the year are no longer keeping your skin nourished, moisturized, and feeling healthy. Here are our best tips for maintaining your best skin this winter.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

It bears repeating. Often in winter skin starts to feel parched as a result of the dryer climate wicking moisture out of it, especially the face and hands, which are exposed to the outside air. Additionally, the cold and wind are harsh on our natural moisture barrier. This season, try switching to a heavier moisturizer or adding oils to your routine. Most importantly, moisturize more often. If youre used to moisturizing once in the morning and once at night, start doing it mid-day as well, either with your regular moisturizer or a face mist. Youll be surprised by the difference this simple step makes.

Nourish

As the dryer climate wicks moisture out of your skin, the nutrients there tend to evaporate. You can replenish your skin by upping your use of serums, especially ones that contain moisturizing ingredients like aloe and peptides. Layer them under your moisturizer day and night to keep skin feeling healthier and more resilient all winter long.

Use Sun Protection

Sunscreen is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer. This is because the sun tends to be reflected off the snow and ice on the ground, exposing your skin from all angles. Make sure to apply a good sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and add protection for the sensitive skin around your eyes by wearing sunglasses.

Try A Humidifier

Whether youre running a furnace or cozying up by a wood-burning fire, the air in your home is probably dry this time of year. Humidifiers restore the moisture in the air, and are a great thing to try if you get very dry skin. For optimal benefits, put one in your bedroom at night so your skin can start the day off right.

Bundle Up

Since youve put all this effort into protecting your skin, dont let it go to waste as soon as you step outside. Try to shield your hands and face, the areas that get the most exposure to the cold and dry weather. If you play winter sports or ski, this step is vital, as skin is more vulnerable to the elements during exertion, when your pores are open and its easy to forget about frostbite when youre having fun.

Dont Forget Your Hair

Hair is just as impacted by freezing temperatures as skin, but we tend to overlook it during the winter. Wear a hat or a hood, and treat your locks to a rich moisture mask once a week to combat the effects of the cold weather.

Visit A Hot Spring

Hot springs are like natures hot tub. Not only are they a soothing way to relax muscles tensed up against the cold, they infuse your skin with nourishing minerals. A quick dip in a hot spring can improve circulation, decrease inflammation, and eliminate toxinsall things that lead to healthy, glowing skin.

Drink More Water

Staying hydrated keeps all of your bodys functions running smoothly, but its especially important for your biggest organyour skin. Drinking water consistently throughout the day is enough to maintain a healthy level of hydration in your skin. This will ensure your skins moisture barrier is able to carry out its innate function, which is to act as a natural barrier to any external and harsh elements, and hold in moisture where its needed.
