How Can I Regrow My Hair?

How Can I Regrow My Hair?

Author: Zachary Farris, MD, FACS

Have you been wondering why you are losing more hair than usual? If you continue to lose hair, you are not alone. There are many conditions including genetics, illnesses or diseases, medications, poor nutrition, hairstyling techniques, or stress that could be behind your hair loss. Many men and women suffer hair loss for many reasons. There is not much you can do to stop male or female hair pattern loss, known as androgenetic alopecia. Your hair loss specialist will help identify and treat the causes of your shedding and help you regrow your hair. Here are a few things to consider:

Proper Nutrition

What you eat can have a huge effect on the health of your hair.  Lacking vitamins A, B, C, D and E, zinc, iron, biotin, protein and essential fatty acids may cause dry brittle hair, slow down hair growth or even cause hair loss.  Certain foods that can help promote hair growth include eggs, berries, spinach, fatty fish, sweet potatoes, avocados, nuts, seeds, sweet peppers, oysters, shrimp, beans, soybeans and meat.  Keep in mind to maintain a balanced diet.

Treat Your Hair with Care

Be gentle with your hair and don’t overdo washing or brushing. Rubber bands, styling products, straightening irons, perms, and hair color can be harsh on your hair. It’s also important to avoid hairstyles that continually tug and pull on your hair such as braids, cornrows or weaves, tight ponytails as they can result in a condition called traction alopecia, leading to hair loss.

Stress less

Emotional and psychosocial stress can result in a condition called telogen effluvium, which triggers temporary hair loss. Stress relieving activities such as yoga, working out and meditation can help alleviate some of your stress and can lead to the regrowth of your hair.

Medications

Medications like Propecia® or Rogaine® can prevent further hair loss but do little to regain an appreciable amount of hair back and cannot give a bald individual a full head of hair. Further, they must be used indefinitely to maintain a response and can be associated with side effects like impotence (Propecia).

Light Therapy

Different wavelengths of light therapy can increase the circulation of blood to the scalp and follicles and help to relieve stress hormones and reduce areas of inflammation.  This noninvasive and painless method can improve your hair quality but don’t count on it to regrow your hair.

Hair Transplantation

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the preferred and most advanced hair transplantation technique available today. FUE (NeoGraft®) can give you a natural hair restoration with your own hair, with little downtime, little discomfort during a procedure performed under only local anesthetic, that leaves no linear scar.

During FUE, follicular units that contain 1-4 hairs are harvested one by one from the back of the head (donor area) without a scalpel or stitches, leaving no linear scar as would occur with the strip method.  The recipient site of thinning and balding scalp is then punctured with tiny holes and the hair grafts are carefully implanted using micro-surgical instrumentation, at an angle and density that matches the original hair.  Patients enjoy permanent, natural-looking results.
